Your Residents’ Right to Vote
As Election Day approaches, it’s important for adults with disabilities to be supported in making their voices heard within politics. It is imperative that they are aware of their voting rights and the importance of voting. But simply knowing this information may not be enough, as they may face barriers to accessibility and more.
It’s not just the right to vote that is guaranteed to adults with disabilities. State and Federal laws also require that each individual has any assistance they require to exercise that right. Access to assistance with voting is also guaranteed by Title 22 for all adult residents in state-licensed facilities. Administrators and staff are an important source of support for these individuals, and are required to ensure access for their residents.
Residential care administrators and staff must ensure that residents:
- Know their rights
- Feel empowered and understand the importance of exercising their right to vote
- Know their options and are able to register
- Have access to the materials they need to make an informed decision
- Are not influenced by the opinions of those assisting them
- Make their own decisions about exercising their right, and that they are not influenced by their conservators
- Do not encounter barriers at the polls, such as poll workers who may not have experience with the voting rights of people with disabilites
